Connect or Die
Before Better Than Back, there was Connect or Die — Chris’s book on the magic of human connection, written with million-selling author John Milton Fogg. Preview the first three chapters free, or grab your full copy right now.
The Connect or Die Wisdom Library
Before Chris ever stood on a stage as “Better Than Back,” he wrote Connect or Die with million-selling author John Milton Fogg — a book about the one thing that decides whether we thrive or just survive: connection. Everything below comes straight from that book. Read it, try it, and use it as your own toolkit for the comeback.
H.E.L.P. — Four Habits of a Master Connector
Chris teaches that real connection isn’t a personality trait — it’s a practice. Four habits make it possible.
Honesty
Say what’s true, even when it costs you something. Manipulation might get you a result, but it always ends the relationship.
Energy
Show up fully. How you do anything is how you do everything — bring the same full-out energy to a hallway conversation that you’d bring to a stage.
Laughter
Don’t take yourself so seriously that you forget to enjoy the person in front of you. Laughter lowers every wall in the room.
Presence
Put the phone down. Look up. The person in front of you can tell within seconds whether they actually have you.
L.O.V.E. — How Real Connection Actually Happens
Connection is created in conversation, not in what happens to you. Four moves keep any conversation honest.
Listen
Listen. Then listen again. Then listen for what actually matters to the other person — their values, not just their words.
Observe
Watch for what someone doesn’t say. Body language, hesitation, and tone tell you as much as their sentences do.
Vulnerability
Go first. Nobody opens up to a person who’s still hiding. True life begins right where your comfort zone ends.
Empathy
Don’t fix people. Don’t diagnose them. Just let them know they’re not alone — that’s the whole job.
Six Lessons Every Reader Underlines
01
Everything Is Already, Always, and in All Ways Connected
Nothing you do happens in isolation. Every interaction either builds a bridge or burns one.
02
Pry Loose Your Kingpin
Underneath every stuck relationship is one belief holding the whole logjam in place. Find it, and everything else moves.
03
Connect… Or Die
Chris means it literally: isolation is a health risk, not just a feeling. Connection is a survival skill.
04
Connection Is Created In Conversation
You don’t find connection, you build it — one honest exchange at a time.
05
How You Do Anything Is How You Do Everything
The way you show up in small moments is the way you’ll show up in the big ones. Play full out.
06
Life Either Happens TO You or FOR You
The story you tell about what happened decides whether it becomes your excuse or your fuel.
Scenes from the room
These moments happened in front of live rooms of 700 to 1,500 people. They’re six of the stories inside Connect or Die.
Courage — Abby, the Lioness
A woman named Abby stands up certain she’s the only person in the theater who has ever felt completely alone. Chris doesn’t let her believe it — he turns to the other 700-plus people in the room and asks who’s felt exactly what she just described. Every hand goes up. “You ain’t all alone in feeling you’re alone.”
Curiosity — Katya’s Question
Chris treats a stranger like buried treasure and his questions like a pick and shovel. A few honestly curious questions with a woman named Katya — where she’s from, what she loves, what she’s afraid of — do in minutes what small talk never manages: real connection, out loud, in front of a room of strangers.
Not Fixing — Adrian’s Phone Call
Adrian hasn’t spoken to his daughter in years. Chris doesn’t coach him on what to say — he just hands him a phone. His instruction to the whole room: set down the urge to fix the relationship and just reconnect, heart to heart. Adrian makes the call. So does most of the room, right there in their seats.
Forgiveness — Paige and Her Brother
Paige hadn’t spoken to her brother in four years after addiction pulled him away — and she quietly let it stay that way. Before she ever dials the phone, Chris says the words that undo her. She calls. He tells her he’s nine months sober and had already set a reminder to call her the next morning and make amends.
Presence — George and “Motion Creates Emotion”
George barely gets his name out before the room comes to its feet, cheering him like he’d won something. A minute later he says something that stops Chris cold: disconnection isn’t a fact, it’s just the story he’s telling himself in the moment — which means he can choose differently. Chris lets that sit for a second before he moves on.
Tension — The Rubber Band
Chris holds up a rubber band, hanging loose between two fingers. Useless like that, he says — it only does its job once it’s stretched. One hand is your comfort zone; the other is the thing you actually want. He tells the room they have about five seconds to act on that stretch before their brain talks them out of it. Comfort doesn’t require anything of you. Connection does.
“Forgiveness is giving up your right to punish.”
— Chris Dorrity, Connect or Die
These are six stories out of hundreds inside Connect or Die.
Try This This Week
Connect or Die isn’t a book you read once — it’s a book you practice. Start with these three.
The Negativity Diet
For 24 hours, catch yourself before every complaint and replace it with one honest observation instead. Notice how much energy comes back.
The Mirror Game
Sit across from someone you trust. Take turns mirroring each other’s expressions for two minutes without talking. It’s uncomfortable — and it works.
DMA — Don’t Make Assumptions
Before you decide what someone meant, ask them. Almost every resentment starts with a guess nobody checked.
The Better Than Back Assessment
Are you Surviving, Searching, Rising, or Unstoppable? 10 quick questions. Two minutes. Find out where you really are — and what’s next.
